Before the Republican National Convention gets under way (if you don’t count last night’s hurricane coverage, that is) there are a few things I wonder about.
I find myself wondering if either candidate can actually deliver on anything they’re promising right now. I’m old enough to have seen a few of these election things, and I we all know that the candidates seldom turn out to be the people they appear to be during the election. I know that campaign promises will be forgotten soon after the election, that a candidate who stands staunchly for or against an issue may stand somewhere else entirely when the confetti is all swept up, that the realities of doing the job may change a candidate’s mind in important, and often disappointing, ways. I’ve seen it happen often enough.
I remember that Richard Nixon promised to end the war in Viet Nam, then took two terms and the invasion of Cambodia to do it. I remember Bill Clinton promising health care reform, and we still don’t have it. I remember George Bush I promising "No New Taxes" then reneging in a big way. Now, granted, these weren’t necessarily lies; I remember Nixon trying to end the war in Viet Nam, I remember Clinton trying to reform health care, and I remember Bush I trying to keep that "No New Taxes" promise. But in each case, reality interfered. Either Congress or the economy or the Viet Cong or the NVA or whoever/whatever refused to cooperate, and promises were broken.
This happens with every new president. "The best laid schemes..." and all that (Robert Burns, 1785). The point is, no President will be able to keep all of their pre-election promises. The question is, which ones are they going to keep and which are just "campaign promises," and do they even know which ones they are going to eventually break?
And we, the poor voters, have to decide, based of poor information and gut instinct, which candidate we’re going to elect.
Bigger question: Does it matter? I remember the 2000 election, which was so close that we still can’t be certain who actually won (even though Gore clearly won the popular vote, the Electoral College is another kettle of fish) and the matter was decided by the Supreme Court (and whether of not the Supreme Court even had that authority is something constitutional scholars will be debating forever). That election was taken out of our hands, and a President was selected for us; what if (and I’ll admit this is very unlikely, but it did happen once) we had to go through the Supreme Court again? The conservative Supreme Court?
What I’m getting at is this: We have to make an extremely important decision soon, and not only do we not have enough information but the information we do have can change drastically and unpredictably after the decision is made. And besides, the decision could be taken away from us anyway. So what’s the point?
Perhaps the point is that it’s got to be done, or at least tried, if we want our political system to keep working. (Of course, you might not think that it is working; if not, then there's no way to get it working without participating.) Like it or not, an important part of that system is us. Me, I’m going to look at the best information I have and choose the candidate that most reflects my values, knowing full well that even if my man is elected I’m going to be disappointed with his performance at some point. I’m going to make the best decision I can with the information I have or can get between now and November.
Or maybe I’ll just have a few beers and sleep through the first week of November

We might get fooled again
At the end of the night of Election 2000, you may recall that I was there at the same place you were. And while you were clearly the bluest of those there, I was red with a tinge of purple. Do you remember our reaction to the (so-called) result. We sang a song... "We won't get fooled again." We all know the lyrics, but the line 'meet the new boss, same as the old boss' stands out.
This election is going to particularly difficult for me. Why? Because on the surface, my vote should be predictable. There is nothing in my belief system that would entice me to vote for Obama. Not because of anything other than his political stances don't match mine. That's the simple part.
The HARD part is that I don't know who to vote for based on my belief and faith. Of all the things I believe (a word I use sparingly), and in all things in which I put my faith (a different critter), I believe in something so strongly that it is the very clinometer (nautical term) by which I gauge my voting inclination. It is NOT the Bible, as you might have guessed... it is The Constitution of the United States of America.
The current president/administration/regime has pulled some SERIOUS blatant fouls on the Constitution, and have, thus far gotten away with it. I won't bother to cite them, you can google it yourselves.
This raises three concerns, with regards to the election this November (STAY AWAKE!!!)
Strike 1
McCain, if elected will not rollback these breaches of freedom and Constiutionality at all. I don't see McCain as a Dubya clone because frankly, he's smarter than that. Has some real life, real horrible experience, real military experience. And he knows how to pronounce nuclear. But, he's far enough to the right to let those encroachments go, because to do otherwise would validate protests of un-Constitutionality.
Strike 2
Obama, if elected will not be ABLE to roll them back far enough... if he tries. But the funny thing about Homeland Security acts, No-Fly lists, warrantless wiretaps and such is that work just as well when the White House changes parties. And under that light, there is little difference between a terrorist and a seditionist. But to be overturned, they have to be challenged... in that Conservative Supreme Court you mentioned. Or Repealed. Yeah. Tell me the LAST law that was repealed. I expect nothing from Obama on that front. And I'll get it.
Strike 3, YER OUT!!!
Worst case.. It's too late.
Ever since that night singing The Who, and the subsequent chad-ification of the election, I have been concerned with a horrible possibility. That Dubya will find an excuse to completely hijack the upcoming election. Specific scenarios included:
Voting Fraud
The Electoral College supposedly was created to prevent Virginia and New York from deciding elections (due to population), but instead, it comes down to 12 old ladies in some precinct in Ohio or Florida. Accusations of fraud in 2000 are common enough that this is NOT unthinkable. And now, 'we' have enough practice that an election can be electioneered with a minimum of actual fraud.
Accusation of Voter Fraud
The news is full of stories about elections being tampered with, invalidated, ignored. What makes us better than them that it couldn't happen here? The Constitution... the same one that Dubya has circumvented time and again. If the GOP can find enough 'evidence' of fraud by the blues, they can invalidate the election. By hook or byu crook remains to be seen.
The Mother of ALL October Surprises
Jeez this is unreasonable, but so was what happened since 9/11... I don't even want to think what I'm thinking, but the list of possible choices is endless. Russian Invasion of [blank] You said yourself that the Russkies didn't want Obama to win ;-) Some major disaster that would make voting difficult. Even the GOP can't control hurricanes, but what if the Eastern Seaboard were to suffer a major power blackout like '03? But this would be my bet (without dabbling into 'capture and trial of Bin Laden', another plane in a building or its ilk, actual terrorist attack, or a faked emergency, as in Close Encounters nerve gas or ebola breakout.)
(Stop, get a cold one, cue up The Who...)
"And the morals that they worshipped will be gone"
The Election takes place, with Obama the favorite in the pre-vote polls. After some drama, some precinct irregularities, some 'evidence' of fraud, the GOP declares fraud, screams recount even though Obama wins by less crook than W '00. Protests against this erupt... supporters of both sides clash "We'll be fighting in the streets" The sitting president, lame a duck as he is, declares martial law in the cities affected. "Certain factions are incited" turn the issue into a race issue, and Detroit '68 and South Central LA '92 erupt in cities across the nation. Sleeper cells of al-Qaeda and anyone else fuel the anarchy under the guise of Constitutional Preservation.
The Red states smell the coffee in their lap, and protests in the outland grow, and nationwide martial law is imposed, the election results invalidated until a fair election can be ensured. By this time, the Congress (including Pelosi, Senators McCain, Obama, Biden, Clinton are 'sequestered' for protection, along with the Supreme Court)
Bush/Cheney hit Cheyenne Mountain and Looking Glass. Palin escapes to Michigan, then Canada and takes a bush pilot to Juneau, and seals teh border, the Bering and begins secession proceedings. Tha Governator seals the California Border, imposes State marital law. Contacts Palin, Gates/Ballmer about forming "Western America".
In the outside world, Medvedev introduces a UN resolution to impose order on the US, citing global economic disaster as the dollar plummets. Israel sees its back uncovered and in desperation, nukes Riyadh, Jedda, MECCA & MEDINA, Syria, Iran and safe spots in Iraq, and takes Lebanon, Jordan. Russia moves to "safeguard Russian Emigrees" slides through Turkey and Lebanon to the shores of Gallilee.
All our Boys & Girls in Iraq are stranded and are tactically nuking their way to Turkey, or Kazakhstan via Tehran.
And the saddest part, is that ONE CAN'T SAY IT CAN'T HAPPEN! The only thing between us and this scenario IS THE CONSTITUTION!
But, the President swore to uphold that document. Yeah, I heard that 4 and 8 years ago. I don't know about you, but I won't get fooled again.
A comment on a comment from The Blues Viking
I don't want this blog to become an endless chain of claim, counter-claim, counter-counter-claim, and so on and so on doobie doobie doo, but Chris' well-reasoned and well-written comment does inspire one thought that should be included here. You see, I too have been waking up in the middle of the night with my favorite Who song echoing in my head, and it ain't from sleeping with the radio on.
Chris wrote:

Believe me, I have given this a great deal of thought. The constitution is all that stands between us and tyranny, and it's a but threadbare of late. And I think he's right that our next President, whoever they are, may be totally unwilling/unable to undo the damage. I just wanted to echo those thoughts; as I said, I never wanted this to become an endless chain of commentaries upon commentaries.
I'll just say this...Chris, I share your concerns. Your commentary kept me from writing one on much the same subject, and thanks for the evening off.
I HOPE your concerns turn out to be unfounded...but time will tell.

"Move FORWARD, was my friend's only cry"~
Sorry, SSOTS just came on my Internet radiostation, much to my glee, as I write this!
Hi boys!
Nice to see you blogging Rosey, I'll be reading more, can I subscribe or does it not work that way here? I should prolly switch my blog over here instead of MySpace.
Well, I do have some comments, but I'll save those for a bonfire in MI next time I visit.I basically See, Hear, and FEEL you both.
But I DID want to say that, for my Birthday this year (11/09; obviously, my birthday has, well sorta sucked in the last decade, being so close to Election or SELECTION Day seems more apt, except when Rumsfield resigned and Pelosi came on as Speaker-I know she's not perfect but she is my homegirl, 415 in the House!....Literally 8-)
~So, while they are recounting, or un-gagging old ladies in Florida and Ohio or 'getting blow-jobs from the Press' as Robyn Hitchcock would say, on the 8th of November, I'll be in Los Angeles seeing THE WHO!!!(for the first time, believe it or not!) and I just wanted you to know that I'll be singing those lyrics louder than bombs:
"Meet the New Boss, just the same as the Old Boss!"
My sore throat the next day will be dedicated to you guys!
Keep blogging M.R.
C.S. where's yours?
Take Care,
Be Well,
and
'Hold on to the Dream'~screamed Roger Waters style!
Love,
Christopher's littlest Sis
Lovechild:
You're seeing the Who? Damn, some people have all the luck!
But to answer your question: If you scroll to the top of this page you'll notice there are two columns; the left column has the text and the right one has a small picture of Hagar the Horrible at the top. If you scroll down to the bottom on the right (Hagar's) column there's a section titled "Subscribe to this crap." I haven't tried it myself, so I don't even know if it actually works, but the rest of this blogger software seems to work just fine so I'll take it on faith that the "Subscribe" thingy works as well.
Anyway, great to hear from you. Take care.
